Hi, I have activated the Facebook Like Thumbnail plugin and allocated an image as a default but it is not working. I have cleared the cache etc.

My website is http://www.khardon.com but please be warned, it contains adult/sexual humour so please don’t open if this may offend you.

The various pages are showing different thumbnails if I share on Facebook so it must be defaulting to whatever images it finds appropriate.

I’m afraid WP is very new to me so, if you are able to help, please explain in laymen terms. I have used custom css but do not understand php files.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi, Yes that’s exactly how it works, picking up context specific appropriate images where it can and uses the default image where it can’t. What’s the issue?

If you want to just use the default image for every page on Facebook, then you can do so by adding this code snippet – http://blog.ashfame.com/2014/05/use-single-image-facebook-website-shared/

Thank you for yur reply. As mentioned I don’t know anything aboyt php files so I added it where I thought you meant and managed to crash the whole site and the WP admin so I have just spent an hour speaking to Bluehost to get it restored! 🙁

Can you please tell me exactly where I find this file. I went to ‘Appearance’ ‘Editor’ and selected ‘Theme Functions’ – underneath it said (functions.php). Iam using the Pixelpress theme (I don’t know if this makes a difference).

I pasted your coding above a line that said ‘Don’t write below this line’.

I clearly went very wrong so would be grateful if you could advise further, thank you!

I understand. I made some changes in that snippet and now you can just use it as a plugin.

So drop the PHP file under wp-content DIRECTORY and activate the plugin “Facebook Like Thumbnail – Force Default Image everywhere”. Are you able to do that?

I know I’m being stupid but I don’t even know where to find wp-content DIRECTORY. Is this via my WP admin site?

I have installed quite a few plugin’s before, directly on the admin site but have never needed to amend any coding, so just have no idea where I should be looking! Sorry!

Take that PHP file, zip it, creating a .zip file which you can upload as a regular plugin inside WordPress, how you install other plugins. Then activate the plugin.

    Hope that helps.

I think I’m starting to get it however, how do I ‘take that PHP file’? Once I have it on my pc I know how to zip it and then add it as a plugin, but I can’t see how I get the file there in the first place. I’m so sorry… you must be pulling your hair out with me 🙂

    Thank you.

Okay, did that, created the zip file and tried to install plugin but it said ‘install failed. No valid plugin was found’…. aaarrrghhh

I just tried that and it worked for me. Here is a screencast I created for you – http://quick.as/4z5au404

Sorry for delay, I had to pop out.

It’s still not working here I’m afraid. The screenshot you have sent is the same as what I have saved. I right clicked on the file and saved it onto my pc, then I went to the file and clicked ‘send to compressed zip folder’. It appears to do this correctly as I then have the zipped folder icon titled ‘facebook-like-thumbnail-force-default-image-everywhere.php’.

I then add it as a new plugin on WP but get this error message:

    Unpacking the package…
    ‘Installing the plugin…
The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.
    Plugin install failed.’

I just can’t work out where it’s going wrong!

The link is a screencast, not just a screenshot. Please do as I did in the screencast and you will be good.

Unfortunately my whole website has now crashed – white screen and no access to the WP admin panel. After 15 hours of talking to host on and off, whatever I did in the php file has made it corrupt and so I have had to employ someone to take a look. Host cannot even get restore to work. I know it’s to do with this plugin and php code but I’m pretty sure it’s my error in not putting something somewhere correctly. So gutted as having just launched the business and done a huge promotion for Valentine’s Day I have now lost a huge opportunity for traffic today but it’s my own fault, I should have asked someone to do it who knows better than me! Thank you anyway for all your help.

Sorry to hear that. Its always wise to bring in someone who can do it for you, if you are not sure what you are doing.
