not to be a post-whore, but:
    I’m using the following paths:
    destination directory: htdocs/blog/wp-images/upload
    uri: http://blog.rpeeck.com/wp-images/upload
    generates two warnings:
Warning: imagecreatetruecolor(): requires GD 2.0 or later in /homepages/36/d94689714/htdocs/blog/wp-admin/admin-functions.php on line 169
Warning: imagejpeg(): supplied argument is not a valid Image resource in /homepages/36/d94689714/htdocs/blog/wp-admin/admin-functions.php on line 182
    Thumbnail path invalid
The image itself successfully uploads. I can’t seem to find a setting for a thumbnail directory… what’s the default?

    gd
    GD Support enabled
    GD Version 1.6.2 or higher
    FreeType Support enabled
    FreeType Linkage with freetype
    GIF Read Support enabled
    GIF Create Support enabled
    JPG Support enabled
    PNG Support enabled
    WBMP Support enabled

rpeeck, the path you have described is only partial, you should mention the entire path as
    /homepages/36/d94689714/htdocs/blog/wp-images/upload
I have a 1and1.com account too, and I have had numerous problems using GD, with GD failing on images with too large and X*Y size (like for 1600*1200 size images)
GD 1.62 and GD 2.0 use different image thumbnail creation functions.
