• I don’t know where else to bring this up, so here it goes:

I’ve registered in order to be able to post on these forums, but the BBPress system running here doesn’t think I exist. I can log in but I can’t access my profile without getting “user not found” error. which sux because it keeps me from being able to find my posts quickly or find the threads I’m tracking.

Anyone else having this problem? ..or know what is going on?

  • (i believe) youre new, once you are considered “now new” your profile will be accessible.

    its an anti-spam measure.

Interesting. And totally non-intuitive. But I hope you’re right.

    Thanks!

For sure there have been some issues though, because around a week ago all the profiles were linking to “410 gone” pages.

The more I think about whooami’s response the less sense it makes to me. I can post all over the place, so if I were a spammer blccking me from accessing my profile wouldn’t impede me from doing that.

I’m back to thinking it’s broken.

I’ve used the “view your profile” function all day, so it’s not broken.

    MY profile works fine.

I explained why this is a profile issue in another thread — but since people are so frigging concerned, Ill do it here too.

I saw attempted spam to my blog coming from wordpress.com’s forums.

The spam was not in posts, it was in the profiles… someone (or more) had signed up for “many” usernames on wordpress.com and nearly all of the profile fields were filled in with spam words. The attmempted was just hundreds of links BACK to those profiles.

I contacted someone who is on the wordpress payroll, and he contacted someone else. When they looked, it was more than even I had seen.

Since then, things have changed. broke or not broke, it doesnt matter. If you’re new, your profile is currently inaccessible.

Is it really that earth shattering? Dont we have better things to worry about? Somewhere?

Thanks for the explanation, that does make sense.

Is it really that earth shattering? Dont we have better things to worry about?

Earth shattering? no, but it is a pain in the butt. Since I can’t access my profile I can’t readily access my posts. Therefore I have to hunt through the forums to see if anyone has responded. Liveable surely, but I’ll be glad when I’m considered “not new” anymore.

bbPress – simple, fast, elegant? I don’t know about that.
… The bbPress error pages are quite inelegant. πŸ™‚

This makes it a very big deal. I would never have signed up for an account if I’d known that. For that matter, it’s doing an excellent job of making WP and those who are working on it look bad to everyone who signs up for a new account. Quite frankly WP went from looking like a decent system to a bunch of schmucks who can’t even post a simple notice on the registration page, not to mention are apparently incapable of dealing with security issues. The last part of that they can thank you’re sorry self for whooami. You’re going around telling everyone how you found a security hole and now since there’s no notice about any changes to the way they’re handling new users it appears as though the security issue is unresolved. Which speaks volumes (accurate or not doesn’t matter) about the quality of system being provided.

Well, since you’re all putting for the perception of incompetence then quite frankly I don’t want this account anymore. I’ll even leave you an option on how it’s going to go down. Either someone gives me an easy way to delete it, or I’ll just start spamming the hell outa these forums untill you all get fed up and delete it for me. Simple no?

So much for finding any competence around here…

How? By making a valid, proactive attempt to protect it’s members INCLUDING YOU by keeping the bullshit spammers out of the forums? Sounds like you’re just pissed that YOU didn’t see the pattern emerging.

Your logic is flawed on the most basic level of every conceivable intelligent argument.

or I’ll just start spamming the hell outa these forums

That statement alone forms the very premise for justification of the actions you protest. Congratulations on successfully shooting yourself directly in the foot.

I’ll even leave you an option on how it’s going to go down.

…and common sense should tell you to tread very lightly when tempted to threaten individuals with whom you have no prior knowledge of their personal skill sets.

( …kicks soapbox into the crowd and heads for the corner tavern…)

    My two cents…

…and thank you, WordPress Dev’s and Volunteers.

so, i guess everything should be on the up and up?

Yeah I agree 100%. This is a royal pain. On top of which the WordPress search function is lousy. I’m assuming that no one knows how to get from ‘new’ to ‘not new’ (assuming that ‘now new’ in whooami’s post was a typo).

    In the interim, this suggestion may help;

(assuming that ‘now new’ in whooami’s post was a typo)

I too, assumed the obvious… that this was most likely a simple typo…

On top of which the WordPress search function is lousy.

I have not experienced that myself.

In all honesty though, I am puzzled at the lack of a sticky or other indicator posted on this subject.

Keep in mind that them who manage this forum’s software aren’t the same as them who volunteer their time here.

So yeah, changes were made and we (me at any rate) are still trying to get a handle on details and such.

Re: The search function is lousy…

Do a search for ‘template tags’ and you’ll see what I mean. Even if you set the “Restrict search to documentation” option, the most relevant page to this search, which is this:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/

…cannot be found in the top ten results. Not even the top twenty.

And this is just one of many examples. I’ve done a ton of reading (and searching) in the WordPress documentation over the years and I’ve come to realize that relying on the WordPress search function is a colossal waste of time. Now I just use Google. Precede the query with ‘wordpress’, e.g., ‘wordpress template tags’ and bam! Top result.

That’s why it irks me to no end to see some of the forum admin/moderators getting snippy and arrogant with people asking questions about stuff that is already detailed in the codex saying “Use the search function. That’s what it’s there for!”
