    At some point within the past 2-3 weeks, Postie started behaving oddly.

    Emails are fetched correctly – either on the 2-hour schedule or when I manually check for emails.

    The post category is assigned correctly, and the subject line is correctly assigned as the post title.

    When I look at the list of pending posts in the admin interface, I see the first part of the content of the email as the automatically-generated excerpt, but when I open the post for editing, all I see is a Classic block that says:

    This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed.

    I’ve tested this with 3 different emails that are authorized to use Postie, and some varieties of content – plain text, formatted text, bulleted lists. The actual content doesn’t seem to matter. I see it in the auto-excerpt, but not in the editing interface.

    Any suggestions for troubleshooting this?

    Since nobody else is reporting this issue and I can’t reproduce it I have to assume it is something specific about your installation. Most likely it is your theme or a plugin.

    The only way to figure it out is to disable all your plugins except Postie and switch your theme to one of the WordPress supplied ones (Twenty Twenty-One).

    Then test if you still have the same issue. If you don’t have the issue then start turning things on one at a time until you have the issue again and then you’ll know the cause.

    Update on this – miraculously, Postie is working again.

    Between COVID and other nonsense happening, I never got around to trying to sort out exactly why Postie wasn’t working correctly.

    And now my approach of benign neglect has apparently paid off, because this morning when someone used Postie to submit a post, it was working as it used to work.

    The one thing that I know of that has changed between last week when it didn’t work and this week when it did is that we have relocated from Colorado back to Arizona. While we were in Colorado, there were a couple odd things happening with our web hosting (unable to connect via SFTP) and our UpdraftPlus backup plugin (unable to send backups to Google Drive) that both disappeared when we came back to AZ. Coincidence? Some bizarre incomprehensible causality?

    Who knows?

    Anyway – Postie is <knock wood> working again!
