    Hello!
I need general help with themes, please. I have uploaded several themes to cpanel using the instructions on the general themes page (I followed the instructions on this page: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes), but they aren’t available to activate on my wp-admin page; they just don’t show up. I don’t have a button on my wp-admin/themes that says “Add theme” that seems to appear in many screen shots and videos I’ve looked at in the course of trying to troubleshoot this issue.
There are two themes available for me to choose from on my admin page, the default (twenty seventeen) and one other (hash-one) that was uploaded via cpanel when the site was first created (almost a year ago now). I can’t figure out what is different about the hash-one theme that it is showing up on the admin page while none of the others are.
Some thoughts I have had…Is there a limit to the number of themes I can upload and choose from on a wordpress.org site? Am I missing something in the upload? Am I accidentally uploading them as hidden files?
Would very much appreciate any help I can get on this.
    Kathleen

I would only upload them that way if you know how to navigate the directories. Otherwise that’s not the way to upload themes.

The WP Admin way would be the way to go and the easiest for novices. To upload your zipped theme files log into your WP site and go to APPEARANCE > THEMES

cPanel you would need to go to WP-CONTENT > THEMES > Unzip them and load them here. Unless your cPanel can unzip there as well.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, that’s where I have been going in cpanel to upload and unzip them. I would prefer to use the WP admin route because it seems much more straightforward (and I am definitely a WP novice), but have been using the cpanel option because my WP admin appearance > themes page doesn’t have a button or option to upload themes there. (I’m trying to attach a screen shot of my page to this post but can’t figure out how to do that either, lol. :P)

I can get the themes to upload to the cpanel file manager, and I can see the two other active themes sitting in the same directory, but they don’t show on my WP admin page. All the support articles I’ve read kindof make it seem like that step should automagically happen – that once they are uploaded to the cpanel file manager they just show up on your admin page, but they aren’t doing that for me.

    This may help:
cPanel only allows you to upload compressed/zipped folders. Once uploaded, you need to use the Extract option to unpack the compressed files so applications like WordPress can access them.

Right, I am extracting them in cPanel. Do I need to do another step with the unzipped file in cPanel to get them to push through?

    Hi,

Just make sure you have uploaded it incorrect path and structure. correct for ../wp-content/themes/twentyseventeen/

In WP admin appearance > themes, are you able to search and install themes?

You can host screenshots on imgdb postimages etc and share links here

Once the theme is extracted it should be seen in the WordPress dashboard >> Appearance >> Themes, provided that the extracted folder is in the /wp-content/themes/ directory in cPanel.

I donโ€™t have a button on my wp-admin/themes that says โ€œAdd themeโ€ that seems to appear in many screen shots and videos Iโ€™ve looked at in the course of trying to troubleshoot this issue

This is odd. Are you able to add plugins? What is your role under Users in the WP dashboard?

@safeer: I cannot search and install themes on WP admin appearance > themes.
My page looks like this: https://postimg.cc/qhkb1wvv
(thanks for the tip about posting the images!)

@barnez: Here’s where my extracted folders are in cPanel: https://postimg.cc/mhDhP6xZ
I do have a choice for the file manager directory, so maybe I am selecting the wrong thing there?

I have not tried to add plugins, so I’m not sure on that one. My role in the WP dashboard is Administrator.

Thanks to all for your help so far!! ๐Ÿ™‚

@kathleenrhoads you are on a Multisite network, you need to enable the themes from network admin. your uploads theme probably already listed there.

    !!!! @safeerz THANK YOU!! That worked!! AWESOME ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

SO appreciate everyone’s help – would never have figured that out on my own.
