Support » Themes and Templates » Themes & Plugins in FTP but not in Dashboard

  • Hi all,

I’m sure this is a topic that has been addressed over and over but I am finding some strange behavior that I can’t seem to find any insight on searching other forums posts.

Yesterday I installed the Blankslate theme (3.2) to my fresh WP install (latest version), WP installs correctly (adding it to a sub-folder public_html/TEST/WP_Install_Here). Worked great, no problems (except interestingly goDaddy doesn’t use “localhost” like HostGator does…did not cause a problem, but just want to capture all the details).

Blankslate theme goes in wp-content/themes just like it should, it shows up in my dashboard, dandy. I start altering the CSS, changing the theme header info properly (but do not change the theme folder name.. dunno if this matters), continued making edits throughout the day. Installed the member_access and SimpleModal Login plugins, worked fine. Continued to make edits, logging in and out of admin/member portals for testing, continually sent files via FTP to update the theme, everything was fine.

Today I login to my admin portal and get an error message saying there is a problem with my current theme. I go to the themes section of the dashboard, it’s disappeared and shows ONLY twentyeleven and twentytwelve but not blankslate. Confused, I poke around to find out that the SimpleModal_Login is also missing. Both still remain on the FTP server-side.

I try to reinstall fresh version of the theme and plugin straight from the original DL folder (and no, there is no nesting). Did not work, they FTP fine, but no show in the dashboard.

So I experiment by uploading them VIA the dashboard rather than FTP – they work! Of course… -_- …but they do not appear in the server-side of my FTP annnnnd therefore cannot edit the stylesheet or other files to continue customizing the theme (except for the minimal options in the theme editor on dashboard).

Lastly, just to reiterate, I am using goDaddy hosting/domain.

    What is going on?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Is this is the same question as here: Please do not create duplicate threads – it makes it much harder for people to help you.

For the record, I have changed the status of the aforementioned thread to resolved as I do not think it’s a blankslate specific issue, and that’s the subforum where that thread resided. Please disregard the above comment and reply to this thread as it provides much more information about my process and concerns. Thank you.

Both of those plugins may have compatibility issues (look at the compatibility info on the plugin pages) – so that would be the first suspect.

Ok, I do see the compatibility info and I have the latest version of wordpress so perhaps that is the issue. But these confuse me…

    SimpleModal Plugin
    Requires: 2.5.0 or higher
    Compatible up to: 3.4.2

    Member Access
    Requires: 3.3 or higher
    Compatible up to: 3.3.2

So it requires a higher version than it’s compatible up to? Am I interpreting that incorrectly? Thanks.

The Requires means that’s the minimum version of WP that’s needed to use that plugin.

The Compatible up to means that the plugin has only been tested up to that version of WP – so since neither of those says 3.5+ , that raises questions. That does not mean there ARE or always WILL BE problems, but in this case, it seems likely.

Sometimes a plugin issue may be with another plugin or with a certain theme…

One way to test is to try the theme without any plugins – then add them one by one and see if you run into problems.

I will take a look at that, then. Considering that the SimpleModal Login was the one that disappearing, I suspect that is the issue, though I have reinstalled both and not run into any issues as of yet. I will continue to test for other issues and post my findings here.

It seemed like it took at least a couple hours for it to break last time since I left it overnight and came back to the error this morning. More to come…
