• I have had to re-install WP half a dozen times this week. I install Twenty eleven, make a child which always fails one way or another. Sometimes it says success but doesnt appear. Other times it gives can’t write errors.

I go to ftp and give /themes and or /uploads public write which usually ends with the blog going blank, and no themes shown in ADMIN except in the activated window a no name nothing with a WIDGETS link. And then I cant install any themes at all.
I try deleting the themes in FTP but nothing fixes it so I assume WP is broke and re install it. This goes on and on in an never ending sad pity potty song, The Child Theme Blues…

    Thanx

*I am first steps setting up a WP site behind the scenes to replace my Serendipity site of 5 years. I have learned enough .html .css .php and unmanaged dedicated server crap to get me by for some time now.

  • You could try a basic, pre-made Twenty Eleven child theme and see how that goes.

Thanks! I did try that and got into the same issues… SOmething would not write, change permission, breaks WP.

I guess what I need to know is what permissions are best for WP directories and sub directories to be sure things work but not break.

I have been reading up a lot on HEADWAY. I think that’s the way I should go as I am very design and layout minded. Trying to get the blog to look like a website.

And I don’t want whatever this problem is to screw up basic headway theme.

    Thanx, Kicker

Are you sure that you are uploading the new child theme correctly? Its folder should be placed in wp-content/themes. Or it can be uploaded via Appearance -> Themes in the exactly the same way as any other theme.
