    I have a custom theme created by a website developer.

    Does this mean I can’t get help here troubleshooting?

    Reading in the Docs section about themes it seems to me that my custom built theme may be the reason I have so many problems updating my site.

    Is it possible my custom theme is the reason I have so much trouble?

    it certainly means that troubleshooting will be more complicated, and might be virtually impossible in some aspects.
    if there is reason to assume that the problem you are asking about is caused by the web developer, it would be the best approach to ask him/her first.

    when was the theme build?
    some wordpress functions deprecate after some time, which might cuase problems.
    however, it is not possible to comment on that issue without having seen your site.
