Themeforest themes – Will you loose custom design changes

I was thinking of purchasing a theme from themeforest but could not figure out if it had the parent + child structure.

I mainly want to make sure that if i do a custom design change to the functions file with a themeforest theme, i will not loose it with any wordpress update. I know with genesis they have a parent + child theme framework so that i can do my mods to the child theme and not loose any changes with wordpress updates. Is this the same with themeforest updates? They do not come with child themes so I was not sure if this was the case…please let me know!

  • Child themes aren’t a feature of a particular theme — you can create a child theme for any theme, even if it doesn’t come with one.

I understand I can create a child theme under any given theme, but i was wondering in particular about themes from themeforest and whether i need to create one to make sure wordpress updates do not affect any custom changes. I was told that their themes would not be affected if i change the functions file without creating a child theme. but at the same time it does not mention a child theme built in, so i was not sure.
