• I am learning as I go along so I realize this may be very basic. I used Filezilla and TierraNet (my web host) tech support ultimately helped me get WordPress on my site – and it now is! (I’m used to wordpress.com and so I’m trying to figure out working with wordpress.org without much web experience.) I’m looking at different themes online outside of those offered directly by wordpress which seem like those would be easier to install but anyway… I’m reading this tutorial on installing a theme (wordpress.thelinuxpenguin.com) and it says “upload the complete folder of your template to your WP installation into the wp-content/themes folder. … best way to to this is via FTP using an FTP client.”

I suppose I don’t entirely understand Filezilla but I am not sure how to make a new file or folder to go in the wp themes folder via Filezilla.

And when they say “upload the complete folder” do I copy the contents or just drag it over there (which I thought read that somewhere)?

This may be very basic but I appreciate the help!

    Thanks.

There’s no difference in terms if ease of installation. However, themes offered on wordpress.org do go through an initial quick test when they are submitted – which is more than can be said for themes offered elsewhere. I’ve seen some pretty dire examples…

Right click on the theme folder on your machine and select “Upload”. You shouldn’t even need to create a new folder on your server if you upload the entire theme folder on your machine. It should be created as part of the upload.

Why is it that I can never get to the village-idiot.org site? It always times out. 🙁

whats your IP? first 2 octets (xxx.xxx)?

i block most of Poland (sorry) and nearly all of China (new), and those blocks would make the site loading time out, since the packets are just dropped.

without an IP though, I wouldnt be able to tell if that’s the case.

    92.234

    In the UK

ive fixed that for you, Im pretty sure. lemme know 😛

I had a pretty wicked block:

    $IPT -A tcp_inbound -p TCP -s 92.0.0.0/8 -j DROP

    that covers 92.0.0.1 – 92.255.255.254

I spose thats kinda evil 😛

Hi esmi, Actually the WordPress Themes that are on this site somewhere are instantly uploaded onto the dashboard when you choose one. I uploaded one and I didn’t have to do anything with FTP. But I saw another one I liked better elsewhere which needs to be installed and uploaded. Thanks so much for the Filezilla link!

Whooami, interesting! Thank you. Will try this! Much appreciated. Will hope for the best! 🙂

    Hi Whooami,

I don’t know if it’s me but I was able to watch video 1 but video 2 had 00:00 content.

I use a Mac and I think that it automatically unzips files at least the one theme I downloaded I *seem* to have all the files in the folder. But now I need video 2! 🙂

    Cathryn.

Hi this is Cathryn again. (I couldn’t get into that original account for some reason.) I was able to watch video 2 after trying again and my files *are* being automatically unzipped (thankfully).

but in video 2 when she drags the new Theme folder from the desktop on the left hand side into the WP themes/content area on the right, the New Theme folder is showing up on the left hand side under ‘documents and settings’ and then ‘desktop.’ My desktop folder is not showing up there. I have local site and some folders but no documents and settings or desktop. What do I do…? Thank you!

A ha! Well I dragged the new Theme folder from the actual Desktop (vs. the Desktop showing in Filezilla – because it wasn’t) into the WP Themes area on the Remote Site (right) side of Filezilla and it uploaded! So excited. So, thank you! The tutorial was most helpful.
