I have a site running a child theme of Cyberchimps Ifeaturepro5 theme. When I updated the Ifeaturepro5 theme, the theme directory name changed. a string of characters was added to the theme name in the wp-content/themes directory like this:

ifeaturepro5 was changed to ifeaturepro5-x5vs (or some string like that)

this then broke the child theme. I renamed the theme back to ifeaturepro5 and all is well.

I emailed the theme support and they are trying to see what may have caused this. Has anyone had a similar issue with theme updates renaming theme directories?

Theme updates *should* never do that. With that said though, a theme update basically copies the new files on top of the old files. So, if the theme’s directory name has changed in the new files, that would explain it.

    Thanks James.

This did not happen until the latest version of WP, I had successful theme updates prior. This has also happened with 2 different themes from cyberchimps. They say they have escalated the issue. I also tried updating sites on different servers. One with the WP install by Softaculous and one with the WP installation by Mojo Marketplace. I also tried deactivating all plugins before an update. Still the theme directory name is changed. They have been helpful with past issues but I think this has them stumped.

I was wondering if there could be something in my server settings that might be the cause, but 2 different servers with 2 different companies seems to eliminate that.

It’s not something that WordPress would do. I suspect it’s the theme. What’s the directory name when you just download the new theme version to your computer?

The theme name is correct on a fresh install. I’ll wait and see what they say and report here. I can easily rename the directory for now. Thanks for the input

Update…The theme developers have acknowledged that there was an issue with their upgrade package
