 * Hi
 * I set up a small wordpress site for my uncle who is a DJ. Last night I was just
   checking in on the wordpress admin and noticed there was a theme update for the
   2011 theme. When i updated the theme it gave me some error. Now when I go to
   djpatthornton.ie the site doesn’t exist. On the WordPress Dashboard it says no
   themes are installed and sure enough when I check in the file manager through
   my host there are no files in the theme folder. I know I can get the theme back
   by downloading it and placing it in the theme’s folder but will i loose all my
   customisations etc etc ….? I asked my host if it was backed up and they said
   possibly and want to charge me almost €40 to recover it….! Annoying. Any other
   way to get it back…?
 * Thanks
 * Richie

 * Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes
   using [FTP](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients) or whatever file management
   application your host provides.

 * I’m sorry but they’re well gone. With all due respect, you shouldn’t have been
   editing the Twenty Eleven theme in the first place. It is the default WordPress
   theme and having access to an **unedited** version of the theme is vital when
   dealing with a range of site issues. Always [create a child theme for your changes](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes).

 * Ok thanks…. When i say customisations it was only a few small things so its fairly
   easy to put it all back. Just wanted to make sure there where no other options.
   I think I’ll install a dropbox backup plugin this time…!
 * Thanks again

 * Even if it’s a few small changes, do use a child theme. Otherwise you will have
   re-add them each time you update the theme.

 * I’d also recommend keeping a copy of your child theme on a local machine somewhere.
   For database backups, have a look at [http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dbc-backup/](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dbc-backup/)
