  • The purpose of a child theme is to allow one to update the parent without having to re-make changes. For the most part this works great. I had difficulty with one theme recently because the author totally re-vamped the theme. (Can’t recall the name, unfortunately.) For the most part, though, you should be fine. Be sure, though, to at least back up the existing theme before converting to the new. An entire site backup is better, of course… Mike

    As long as the parent theme is able to receive auto updates, you simply click the link to update it and check to make sure nothing breaks along the way. If it is not capable of receiving auto updates, you will have to delete the old parent theme and upload the newer version.

    You do not have to enable the parent or anything to update it, if that’s what you are asking.

    As MikeTurco mentioned, make certain you make backups before updating. Doing so will most likely save your bacon sooner or later.
