[Theme: Twenty Twelve]

  • Instead of having multiple blog posts scrolling down my home page, I want to have only the most recent one displayed with older posts available as thumbnails in rows/columns below the most recent post…perhaps with an image and short description of the post. Could I get some recommendations on how to accomplish this goal? Is there a theme I should install? plugins? Or perhaps a way I can do it by customizing the content in the Twenty Twelve theme? I am relatively new to WordPress and have been worried about using non-wordpress themes to to support and security issues.

This might be easier to do with a different theme. You could look for a News or Magazine style theme.
Otherwise, you can easily display the first post (most recent) differently from the other ones. I’ve done this on this theme here – http://words.usask.ca/wcvm/category/news/u-of-s-news/
The latest post is slightly longer and displays a larger image on the right.
This is easy enough to do if you are comfortable customizing WordPress themes and familiar with the loop.

You mentioned being relatively new, so perhaps looking for a better theme might be better.

I think you must mean, concerned about using themes that are not on the official WP repo? Non WP themes won’t work with WP.
If that is what you mean, you can be sure that the themes on the repo are indeed great, but only because they go through rigorous review process. Some commercial themes are good too though, but the repo is the best place to start.
