  • Hey guys, I’ve turned to you guys for countless advice in the past few weeks and I just want to start off by saying thank you, thank you, thank you. Our site is almost ready to launch, save a few more tweaks, and I’m very nervous because I haven’t made a child theme yet. It’s not because I’m lazy, but instead because I can’t figure out how to do it. All of the links I’ve read make it sound like it should be such a simple process but I can’t figure out how to upload the child theme into my directory. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’d feel much more comfortable if the child theme was created before launching the site. I’ve been saving my CSS into a word document every day, so I’m terribly nervous but I’d really like to stop doing that and just start editing a child them. Thank you.

Below are the links I’ve looked at, but they all seem to just fly by how to actually upload something into the directory. Any help would be great, thanks again!

    esmi, you are a god.

    or goddess. Your choice.

    Thank you.

okay, I lied. One last question, how do I move the various different templates over to my new child theme?

You copy them over into your child theme using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Thanks esmi. I’m using dreamhost and I can’t figure out how to move the templates over. Any help?

I’m trying to setup Google Analytics right now via Yoast’s plugin and its telling me the code isnt installed and I’m guessing thats because Yoast’s plugin cant find the header template.

Oh dear god, I tried to do move everything over from the twenty eleven theme to my child theme and now im getting the below message whenever I try to logon to http://www.edgeeks.com or when I even try to go onto my dashboard. Help! Please.

I think I copied over my functions file.

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare twentyeleven_excerpt_length() (previously declared in /home/marisakaplan/edgeeks.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven-child/functions.php:318) in /home/marisakaplan/edgeeks.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/functions.php on line 320

should i just ftp in the functions.php file from the link you posted earlier? I’ve done a little research myself and it looks like this was caused because I copied and pasted the functions.php file from the default twenty elven theme to my child theme. Logic would think that if I delete the functions.php file via FTP from the child them now, and reload the functions.php file that I downloaded last night, that all would be corrected, right? Please. Ahh.
