Hi, Caroline suggested I create a child Theme to protect my pages from possible future changes. Great idea…..one problem…..how do I create a child theme?? There are probably hundreds of guides out there for this so hopefully one of you guys can recommend one to me.
All the best
ok it only took a few seconds and I had hundreds of create child theme links!!
I get the point now Caroline. I will have to do some learning !! Colours, fonts and sizes are my usual changes so a simple child theme will take care of that.
One question to the forum readers. I like drag and drop. What editor would you guys recommend for designing a page or site that would create all the necessary files I would need to create a Theme?
The only drag & drop editor that I know of is http://www.artisteer.com/ but that won’t help you to create a child theme – only a new, standalone, theme.
Thanks Esmi. No I actually meant create a theme. What I want to do is load up a Theme and then change everything I want to change so I end up with my own Theme. I know what I want but I hate the thought of starting from scratch. I’ll check out artisteer.
Have you had a look at Suffusion? It’s very customisable.
Another drag and drop (commercial paid product) is Headway, but this is a frameworks rather than standalone theme, there are a number of well supported frameworks out there that add a lot out the box.
Never used any so it is not a recommendation, I prefer the hard way.
Headway becomes expensive as you need to buy the skins that go with it. Not tried Suffusion so I’ll look at that today. I used Flexibility3 and thought I had found what I wanted. It’s very customizable, in fact too much !! Once you go away from the basic color you end up having to set almost everything you can imagine.
What I’m looking for is this:
I want to be able to switch elements on or off page by page. No sidebar on my market place for example. Nothing at all on my bio page. Totally different banners on different product pages. No footers on the blog page. That sort of thing.
I want to change the size of elements on specific pages. On the market place I want to use the full width of the page, have menus top and bottom but on product review pages I want the banners, pop boxes and adverts in the side bar to reflect the product. Product adverts change in type and size so the elements need to change as well.
I want to have a Theme look that has certain colors but the look is slightly different on the different type of page. Landing page to be glossy and alive, product review pages to be more business like with just a few appropriate adverts, but the market place to be pizzaz !!
No I know I can employ a good design agency that could do that but I can’t afford it, so I have to do it myself.
I downloaded Artisteer last night and it looks promising. If the business side takes off and brings in some money then I might invest in one of the top programs like Dream Weaver or whatever. It’s been a few years since I used Dream Weaver and from what I remember it is not drag and drop. Things may have changed.
WOW Headway has changed !! It’s been a while since I looked at that. Everything I listed above is straight out of the box. Page by page, post by post features, drag and drop for everything. The skins are now built in !! Last time I looked it was around $80 to buy but it looked like one of the defaults from WP. The skins were around $45 each. Most of the skins were fixed. To change color you needed a different skin, that’s what I meant by getting expensive. All of that has changed. I will be buying Headway today
Thanks for the link raindrops
edsmi. I am not skilled enough with code for that. I found a theme that would let me switch sidebars off on pages but I didn’t like so much about the theme. Everything I tried had a problem with it. I’ve decided on Headway. Bought it a few hours ago. Just getting to grips with it now. I can switch any item off anywhere and simply drag and drop anything anywhere. It certainly looks like it will do everything I need. I use a lot of sub domains so having something versatile like this is great for me. The tutorials and documentation is the best I have ever seen for WP add ons and the community seems really active which is a good sign.
