Theme like The Boston Globe? (4 posts)

The Boston Globe's new premium website (www.bostonglobe.com) is all the rage. If you haven't seen it, check it out. The main advantage to it over traditional sites is that it rescales to the window/device it's in. So it looks great all the way from a vertical iPhone (with one column) to a full-sized desktop monitor (usually three columns) and everything in between. No need for a separate design for different devices.

Has anyone tried to replicate this? Not exactly, of course, but taking the ideas of rescaling, adding and dropping columns, and generally having a site that looks great no matter what device you're on?

The scaling of the width according to the browser is what I have heard commonly referred to as responsive web design and that style of scaling is currently being used in the latest default WordPress theme TwentyEleven.

The Globe may (and most likely does) have a lot more going on in their theme. But the rescaling is all the rage theses days and for good reason with tablets, phones, laptops and wide screen desktops all with a different resolution.

Yes responsive design (or adaptive design) is becoming popular and quite a few premium WordPress theme developers are creating themes with responsive designs. On PremiumWP we have compiled a list of the best responsive WordPress themes released so far.

An older link to the Boston Globe's own video:

    The technology behind BostonGlobe.com

Three evolutionary results from that unfinished effort:

1.) Responsive Images: How They Almost Worked and What We Need

2.) W3C Responsive Images Community Group

    3.) picturefill.js

Responsive, Adaptive, and Mobile First Web Design is still an unfinished business.
