So long story short, removed what i found to be a malicious code in a theme that our web designer had designed (the theme). Removed the code from theme functions.php after hitting save website gets internal error 500. Cannot login to admin panel because of error 500. Contact ipage who hosts for us and they are able to get me back in the admin panel, to which im trying to rebuild our website form scratch. Upon trying to install a new theme i get this:

    Downloading install package from https://downloads.wordpress.org/theme/gravida.1.3.4.zip…

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the theme…

    Could not create directory. /hermes/bosnaweb06a/b1073/ipg.sierrattcom/wp-content/themes/gravida/

    Theme install failed.

No matter what theme, i can look at the file manager and see that this theme is already installed and has a folder. I try this with a theme that is not already installed and i get the same failure. I have no idea what is causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • rename your current theme when wordpress doesn’t see it. It display the default theme. You should be able to get into your admin panel then.

Thank you for your input mrtom414, but maybe i didnt word my question right.

I can get into my admin panel.

I cannot install a new theme due to the error above, i get the same installation failure no matter waht theme i try to install. That is my issue. Thanks.

Your site is locked by the old theme. If wordpress can’t find that theme it will use a different one.

When you ftp into your site you can rename the old theme to anything you want.

When word press doesn’t find that theme it will load the default theme which will probably be twentyfifteen.

You should be free to do anything you want at that point.

the theme will be located under wp-content/themes

I really appreciate the input Tom, but my problem lies in not being able to install a new theme. Currently, they’re no themes listed under wp-content/themes. Just index.php. My problem is not being able to install a new theme via wordpress. i hit install, and i get the aforementioned failure notice. Are you saying i need to download the actual files for the theme and using ftp, install it myself? Again, i apologize, im not too savvy with this sort of thing, our web designer has passed and i have been placed on website duties. I may have bit off more than i can chew.

Sorry I didn’t understand that you had no themes in your theme folder. If you can go to phpmyadmin you can look under the options table. You should find an entry for template and stylesheet.

You can try uploading a theme and place it in the themes folder and change the values in the database for template and stylesheet to the name of the theme you placed in the folder.

I honestly don’t know if this will work. I never tried it myself.

Im not sure i understand. I am not using phpmyadmin, are you recommending i download it?

I have downloaded the zipped theme folder, and tried uploading it via wordpress admin account. Still same error. Im not sure what i can do at this point. It seems as though my site is stuck. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

It’s a program for accessing your mysql database if you’re using a shared hosting it is usually installed on the server. It doesn’t have to be phpmyadmin it just the most commonly used program.

I don’t think the theme contains any kind of malicious codes. We again rechecked the whole theme.

Remember themes in WordPress are reviewed by Theme Review Team who are doing this for the past 5-7 years. So not just this means we missed it, our 2000+ users who downloaded it missed it but also the reviewer missed it.

High chances of this happening are very very rare.

This code i found was not in your theme. This was a theme created by a web designer the company hired who has since passed away. That is why i decided to go with your theme as i believe those would be free of any thing unwanted. Thank you for your input.

In order to solve this issue i had to call my hosting service(ipage) and they worked their magic and i was informed my themes and plugins were disabled. Which was causing the issue. All is well. Thank you Tom for your help.
