  • My active theme is MyThemeTemp. Indeed, if I modify one of those theme files, my site changes.

    The mystery is I don’t have a MyThemeTemp folder (e.g., /public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/MyThemeTemp). I do have a MyTheme folder.

How can this be? Where are the MyThemeTemp files on disk?

Note: I did not create the themes or install them; I only maintain the site.

  • Where are you getting the ‘MyThemeTem’ name from? Is that the name used in the admin area? If so, that’s the theme name, and not the folder that it’s in. To find out if that’s the right one, just look at the themes style.css file and you’ll be able to see the theme name set there, and I’ll be 99% sure that it will be ‘MyThemeTemp’.

Yes, I see the “MyThemeTemp” in the admin area. On the Themes page, I have both “MyThemeTemp” (active) and “MyTheme”. Also have both in the drop list on the theme editor page.

I think I was not clear. I have a folder for every theme in the theme drop list except for “MyThemeTemp”. So, where are the files for “MyThemeTemp”? How can I map the files I am looking at in the theme editor to a folder on disk if the names are not the same?

The theme files have to be *somewhere*. They don’t just dissapear.

What folders are in the /wp-content/themes/ folder? Have you looked at every sub-folder of that to check the style.css in each to see what each one says the theme name is?

One way that will let you see for sure is to actuvate the MyThemeTmp theme and then look at the source of the homepage for the style.css file for the theme. That will shwo you the exact folder that it’s in, and you can then find that one on the server.

I never said they disappeared. 🙂 I just said I don’t know what folder they are in.

I looked at source and they are in the “MyTheme” folder. The name doesn’t match the active theme, but it matches an unused theme – now that is confusing! I think the unused theme “MyTheme” is in a folder called “BLANK theme”. Nice.

Do you know if it is safe to delete all themes except the active theme?

If you don’t mind losing them sure. Just remember that if you want to use them again you’ll need to re-load them onto your site.
