# Theme Editing

 * Just starting out with WordPress and after using several themes I’m finding that
   features I’d like are missing, e.g.
 * 1) Center align the menu
    2) add my own images to individual pages e.g. not just
   a coloured rectangle (plugins like WP Header Images don’t always work).
 * What is the typical way to achieve this?
 * Do I use the Theme Editor to change the code (will any updates overwrite these)?
 * Add additional CSS (how do I know what I can add)?

 * I would suggest using custom css and adding it under
    Appearance → Customize.
 * In general, you should be picking the most basic theme you can and then using
   a child theme to modify it with any design features you are looking for such 
   as centered menus or header images.
 * There are page builders that will help with the header image thing too depending
   what exactly you are looking for with the header images.

 * When looking at plugins to add functionality you are looking for make sure the
   plugin is advertised to work with the current version of WordPress.
