Theme directory / plug-ins

I’ve been looking at possible ways to implement a website i’m trying to set up and I keep going round in circles. I’ve tried my best to find all the answers myself but I really could use a point in the best direction.

I’m setting up a website that will advertise activities in my area. I want companies to be able to join the website and list their own business and also edit that listing. I’d like them to be able to have a bit of text info on their listing and also some pictures and map integration. I would also like to allow viewers to rate each activity.

I’ve found some directory themes like http://www.appthemes.com/themes/vantage/ and http://templatic.com/app-themes/directory-theme that look like they do most of what I want but to me they look too busy and clunky. I really want this website to look clean and simple (probably a bit like me ;-p).

Ideally I’d like to find a nice clean theme and add plug-insto get all the features a require, but I’m having trouble working out what ones I need or what ones work best. I don’t have a lot of experience in coding, although I’m trying to learn as we speak.

Again any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
