 * Hi, my custom theme seems to cause problems since one of the latest WordPress
   updates (can’t tell which one exactly).
 * Turning off all plugins doesn’t help. The problems only occur when using the
   custom theme.
 * The problems are:
 * – I can’t move widgets around to other positions in the sidebar or add / remove
   widgets
    – I can’t open the widget settings with the small arrow in the widget
   sidebar menu – I can’t open similar menus in other plugins (so basically I can’t
   open anything with a menu which is opened by clicking on the small arrow) – Some
   plugin options don’t load (for example YOAST misses like half the page when trying
   to access the options) – The design customizer doesn’t load
 * Everything is updated. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks!

 * If this was a custom theme, you may have to go back to your developer team and
   ask them to make the necessary change(s) to the theme
 * You may find [Theme Handbook](https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/) useful.

 * I don’t really have a developer team, the Theme is around 4-5 years old and worked
   well until a couple of weeks. I am pretty sure I made changes to the widgets
   etc. earlier this year, so one of the latest WordPress updates must have caused
   the issue.
 * So there is pretty much nothing I can do to fix this aside of getting a developer
   checking my theme?

 * That suggest your custom theme is perhaps not compatible with the latest update.
 * Forum volunteers are not given access to commercial products, so they would not
   know why your custom theme is not working properly.

 * Enable wp_debug in the ‘wp-config.php’ file.
 * define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);
    change to define(‘WP_DEBUG’, true);
 * Look for error logs in these locations:
    /public_html/error_log /wp-admin/error_log
 * Read this article:
 * > [Debugging in WordPress](https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/)
 * Install this Plugin and see if it helps.
    [https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/)
   Enable jQuery Migrate Helper
 * Also make sure to install a Backup Plugin if you haven’t already.
 * To further explore your problems you can use the DevTools in your Browser.

 * Please try installing [https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/)
   to see if that fixes the issue.

 * Thank you so much! Using the Enable jQuery Migrate Helper plugin did work. The
   site runs smoothly on WordPress 5.4 but has the described issues once I update
   to 5.5.
 * What would be the correct fix for this issue? I guess using the jQuery Migrate
   Helper plugin is only meant as a temporary solution and not a proper fix, right?

 * Yes. REad the wptavern article.
