  • …the bad attitudes it has brought out of the woodwork with the ol’, “if you merge this into core, I’ll switch platforms.

Just like for others, this change will obsolete a few of my smaller plugins. I’m never fond of that. Having gotten started with open source in the early 2000s, I’ve run the gamut of CMS platforms and have been down this road time and again. On the other hand, this has forced me to innovate, learn new concepts, and create all sorts of things I hadn’t originally envisioned.

We can’t look at Gutenberg like it’s only a possibility – it’s definitely coming to core. Instead of spending time flaming and fighting it, take this time to become an expert, to get ahead of the game, to give your clients a reason to pay you more. It’s always easier to learn a new thing at your leisure in its infancy than it is to crash-course on it later when you’re facing a deadline.

We use WordPress because it’s at the top of the game, so switching platforms over Gutenberg seems rash and ill-conceived. I suspect very few will actually jump ship, though, so I just want to say: we can let this change make us bitter developers or better developers. The choice is our own. I, for one, am going to make the best of it.
