The Widget only shows thumbnails of uploaded pictures

  • Hello!

I’m having a problem with the widget (or maybe it is not a problem, is a limitation of the use). I have a blog of pictures (every post is a picture), and I want to use this widget to show the most popular pictures. Almost all of the pictures of my blog are hosted on a different site instead of being hosted on my own wordpress. The widget only shows thumbnails of the uploaded pictures, but not of almost all my posts that have pictures but they are not uploaded into my wordpress.

    What can I do?

    Hi there,

External images are not fully supported yet. Previously, the WPP plugin used to work with a third-party script called TimThumb which allowed WPP to create thumbnails on-the-fly from either self-hosted images or external ones.

Honestly speaking, it worked pretty well for the vast mayority of users – however, some people seemed to have too many problems configuring it so I decided to drop it and go with a more native solution using WordPress core functionalities. So far, I’m very pleased with the results but as you can see there’s still room for improvement. Fear not, however, since I’m already working on it.

And finally: ¡Gracias por tus palabras, me siento honrado!

So… I can do something? It is possible to install the TimThumb script? Or the only option is to wait until a future update of the widget?

Well, right now your options are:

    1. Downgrade to WordPress Popular Posts version 2.3.2 which is the last version that supported TimThumb – the drawback is that you’ll be missing the tons of updates I’ve made to the plugin since 2.3.2.
    2. Wait for the next update, hopefully WordPress 3.0.0 which includes a bunch of fixes + new features.

Uhm, it is a surprise if you say that it worked well for almost everyone….
It is not posible to allow people to choose to activate manually the usage of TimThumb?
In any case, lot of thanks for your solution… I suppose that i will downgrade the plugin 🙁

Yep, it did work fine for most people (even for me), so I’d say it’s safe to use. If you encounter any issues with it, let me know (and, as usual, backup your site & database defore downgrading, just in case).

Uhm I have downgraded to the version 2.3.2 however it is not working… In fact… I have the same as with the other version (and I have cleaned the cache and all)
    Any idea ? 🙁

Well, it could be for a number of reasons (which are the ones why I removed Timthumb in first place hehe):

    1. Check that the cache folder (wordpress-popular-posts/cache, I believe) is writable – this is needed so Timthumb can create the thumbnails.
    2. Check that your hosting has installed (and enabled!) the GD library.
    3. Just in case, also check that Timthumb is configured to allow external images. For this, open the timthumb.php file using a text editor and set EXTERNAL_IMAGES to true (default is false). According to this, you also need to specify the allowed external sites as well.
    4. Timthumb only works with the following image formats: JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG.

Number 1 and 3 are correct. So it must be number 2. How can i check the GD library or instal/activate it?

Lot of thanks again! You are a hero! 1,000 billion thanks!

Easy, follow these instructions to verify whether the GD library is enabled or not. If it is enabled, then please post your site’s URL so I can go take a look at the code.

    Seems to be enabled…

    My timthumb is in:

    /wp-content/plugins/wordpress-popular-posts/

there i have my cache folder with the following permisions: rwxrwxr-x

Here you have my php info:

    http://californiahotties.byethost14.com/phpinfo.php

And here my website (is a little bit spicy hehe):

    http://californiahotties.byethost14.com/

And regarding timythumb I’m using the default configuration you give with your downgraded widget. I think the important parameters are this ones:

if(! defined(‘ALLOW_EXTERNAL’) ) define (‘ALLOW_EXTERNAL’, TRUE); // Allow image fetching from external websites. Will check against ALLOWED_SITES if ALLOW_ALL_EXTERNAL_SITES is false
    if(! defined(‘ALLOW_ALL_EXTERNAL_SITES’) ) define (‘ALLOW_ALL_EXTERNAL_SITES’, TRUE); // Less secure.

    And they have TRUE value

    Hi there,

Just checked your site and noticed that the plugin has been set to retrieve the first image on post’s content. Apparently, the plugin seems unable to find any IMG tags on your texts, hence why it shows the default thumbnail.

How are you adding these images to your posts?

    <div><img class=”aligncenter” alt=”” src=”http://31.media.tumblr.com/77ad2e62b09bb9d7b4a27a704fa193af/tumblr_ms70624U2v1qz9pzzo1_500.jpg” border=”0″></div>

Quizás deberia escribir la sentencia más clara y ponerle por ejemplo el alt?

Ok, the translation for my last entry is the following one:

I use hotlink to add images to my posts. You can see here an example of how i post pictures:

    <div><img class=”aligncenter” alt=”” src=”http://31.media.tumblr.com/77ad2e62b09bb9d7b4a27a704fa193af/tumblr_ms70624U2v1qz9pzzo1_500.jpg” border=”0″></div>

May I write the sentence clearer, for example including the alt field?
