Support » Plugin: Give - Donation Plugin and Fundraising Platform » The Give plugin cannot support Kickstarter-like campaigns

  • I tried Give’s Countdown plugin along with the Donation Goal feature of their regular Give plugin. This is what I found out.

The Countdown graphic and Donation Goal cannot be displayed together on the first
page with just a simple Donate button like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and other crowd funding sites do.

You can have the Countdown graphic and the simple Donate button but the Donation goal only shows up when you click the Donate button. The Donation Goal is suppose to motivate you to click the Donate Now button so this is too little too late.

You may be able to have both the Countdown graphic and Donation Goal on the webpage together if you include all the detail fields to allow someone to enter in the donation, e.g., amount, email id, etc. This is just way too busy. Kickstarter and the others have a very simple, clean format with all the detail fields showing up when the user clicks the Donate button.

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review, and for testing our plugin.

The functionality you are looking for would be possible with some custom code. If I’m understanding it correctly, the two things most important to you are the countdown timer and donation Goal both showing up on the page before clicking Donate now.

Here’s a tutorial where we demonstrate how to create a custom archive page of all give forms: https://givewp.com/donation-forms-one-page/

Using the tips there, you could create an archive page that includes the elements you need.

Additionally, here are a couple of tutorials for theming Give in General: https://givewp.com/documentation/developers/themeing-with-give/

Both of those tutorials are aimed at developers or folks comfortable with CSS, PHP, and extending WordPress in general, but they demonstrate how to extend Give in ways similar to how you are looking to.

My goal here is simply to let you know that while we don’t currently give you the ability to create a Kickstarter dot com competitor out of the box, much of the functionality you are looking for is possible because Give is designed to be extensible by developers.

Finally, we’re constantly adding new functionality and features to Give, and crowdfunding is one of the things we’ve discussed internally and may release in the future. Head over to our coming soon page at https://givewp.com/coming-soon to request/vote for the features that most interest you.

It’d also be great if you’d reconsider a product review that slams us for a feature that (a) we’ve never advertised or said was possible without custom code and (b) is technically possible for a developer to achieve. If there is anywhere we’ve advertised or represented that creating identical behavior to Kickstarter is possible out of the box with Give, please do let us know so that we can clarify. It’s never our intention to mislead.

Thanks again for giving Give a try!

Well, you do talk about your Countdown and Goal features. I am just saying that these can’t be used to create a Kickstarter-like campaign. I would have thought they would which is why I spent the time to try it.

I looked at your videos about building custom pages using CSS, PHP, etc. This is way beyond my expertise and something I would dearly love to avoid learning.

I hope you do develop the CrowdFunding feature on your “coming soon” vote page. It got 961 votes which is the second highest number of votes for the features you list.

You have competitors that appear to provide the crowdfunding functionality now. I am trying out https://www.wpcharitable.com/
