Support » Plugin: Admin Columns » The display of default columns will be deleted in first use

  • Resolved simongcc

    I have just installed 3.4.1.

    Bug producing step:
    1. After newly installed
    2. Go to Admin Columns
    3. Choose Media
    4. Add Dimension
    5. Click Update, the newly added column and default columns seems existing.
    6. Refresh page
    7. Only newly added column remains

After that I can add columns to display without problem.
But it means, only custom column(s) remained instead of adding column with existing default display columns in first use.

    Thanks for your feedback.
In order to manage columns, Admin Columns required to know about the default columns first. To do that, the overview page must be loaded once, so Admin Columns recognized the default column first.

You should have seen a message on our Settings page to load the media page first. I must admit that this ‘workaround’ should not be necessary but we did not yet found a way to do this nicely. I believe we still have a ticket on our issue board that states that we have to tackle this.

Anyway, I hope this will not stop you from using our plugin and we are always open for suggestions. Enjoy the plugin!

I understand your points. I think I will suggest this:
When it is being loaded once, at the time of loading, it creates pre-set columns from those loaded columns as custom columns for the user. When a user adds or removes then the expected behaviour is not interrupted. The newly added column together with default columns. So it will be naturally merged together. The UX is also smooth.
If my understanding of the flow and system is right. I think it will solve the problem.

The problem is that we really need to know the default column in order to store them. When you manage the columns and click on save/update the complete state (custom and default columns) are stored, so when the default are not available, they’re also not stored in the column set. But I’m sure we find a graceful way of handling this in the future.

May thanks for giving us your insights on this matter.
