The alternate image appears in different spot to original thumbnail

In my current theme, each product is shown in horizontal sections – image on left, then title & description in middle, price on right. Next product shown below it.
This plugin makes the secondary image appear on the right, where the price is, not where the primary image is (which remains visible).
Is this how it’s supposed to work? I thought the thumbnail image would change from one image to next.
