Support » Fixing WordPress » Text displaying vertically on WP Posts dashboard, what’s happening?

  • I’m not completely sure why, but my WP dashboard has a habit of making all the text vertical. It only seems to happen with the Posts. Sometimes it goes back to the standard form, but I’m not sure what’s causing it to change or how to stop it. I have Polylang and Lingotek plugins installed.

how it should display (pages example)
    correct display

    how it currently displays
    vertical dashboard

Have you tried: – Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches. Not just your browser, but any op cache or content network cache as well such as Cloudflare. If your host provider has a “Purge Varnish” option or if you can ask your provider to flush memcache on your server.
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
manually resetting the plugins folder by FTP/ SFTP (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder (if you have created such folder). The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

I’m having exactly the same problem. Most of my text is vertical, only in the posts page on the dashboard.

Ok. So I figured out which plug-in was causing the problem for me. It was Yoast SEO. I’m bummed because I really wanted to use that plug in. But as soon as I re-activate it, the problem returns.

I experienced the same problem today on both my laptop and my desktop with a much larger screen. The posts dashboard was displaying the post title, post type, and editing links vertically making it difficult to read or navigate.

I started deactivating plugins and checking the posts dashbaord after each one. I noticed that sometimes the problem improved and sometimes there was no difference. I deactivated Yoast too, and although the problem improved, it did not resolve.

Eventually I noticed the pattern. I have several plugins installed that add one or more columns to the posts dashboard. (Yoast SEO, Squirly SEO, Like Button Rating, Google Analytics Dashboard for WP, and WP Members) So for each plugin that I deactivated, the fewer columns there were, creating more room for the post title — making the dashboard readable again. Also explains why it only affects the post dashboard.

    Hi everyone,

I believe the issue with post titles being displayed vertically is due to it being compressed by the limited table width and not the plugins itself.

Under the list of posts, click screen options on the top right of your screen and remove display for unnecessary plugins to allow spaces for the post title to display horizontally.

    Hope this helps!

Wow Brendon, that was exactly it! Thank You so much! I was freaking out for no reason. 😂

Yup. That did it! I was searching for a plugin to add. This is so much better.

    Thank You Sir!
