TESTING code before publishing a blog??

I’m working on a redesign of my friend’s blog. She already has a WP blog. I’m wondering how I can set up a test page or test blog so that I can make changes to it – without affecting her current blog. Is there a way to do this? I’m not skilled enough to just code it and upload it… I need to see it too.
