Support » Plugin: Easy Testimonials » Testimonials not cycling, advance buttons don't work

    Hello,

I’m using a child theme of Interface and until recently my Easy Testimonials widgets were working fine. I have the “Easy Testimonials Cycle” widget running on my right hand sidebar as well as at the bottom of my home page. However, recently the automatic cycle (set to 5 seconds=5000 for me) stopped cycling and the forward/back arrows also do not cause the testimonials to change. As a test, I also changed the number of testimonials to show on this widget from 1 to 5. Still, only 1 testimonial showed after changing this setting. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

    Hey Jen!

Can you clarify for me what setting you changed from 1 to 5? I know for a fact that our slideshow won’t work unlesss more than one testimonial is being displayed (as there won’t be any testimonials to transition through.) It sounds like this would have been set correctly, before, for it to have been working, but I wanted to ask!

If the slideshow isn’t working, and you have the correct number of testimonials displayed, then likely a Javascript error is occurring. With the arrival of WordPress 4.5, many core javascript includes were updated. I know of several popular themes that started encountering javascript errors with this update, and those errors would prevent any other javascript from running (including our slideshow!) It could be you are experiencing a similar problem!

These issues were present in Genesis, Avada, and many other themes. You can use a browser inspector’s console to look for Javascript erros.

If you can share a link, I would be happy to take a peak for you.

    I hope that helps!

    All the best,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

Thanks for your response! The setting that I had changed was in the widget GUI and was labeled “Slideshow Options: Testimonials Per Slide”. Does that change the number of testimonials that are shown simultaneously? I only want one at a time, but I was playing with this to see if the plugin was able to make the corresponding changes on my site, and it didn’t seem to. I have “Filter Testimonials: Count” set to “-1”.

I did a quick check of my page after turning on WP_DEBUG and I didn’t see any javascript errors. The only issues were with my theme using a deprecated constructor. I didn’t see anything obviously wrong when I used “inspect” on chrome. However, although I am an avid programmer, I’m quite new to wordpress and web programming, so I can easily be missing something. I am using a child theme, so I also switched back to the main Interface theme on my local development version on my computer, just to check. I experienced the same issues when not using my child theme.

If you don’t mind taking a look, my site is: owentutoring.com. The homepage uses “Easy Testimonials Cycle” near the bottom of the page. The other pages, such as “owentutoring.com/services/”, contain the widget in the right sidebar. If there is a problem with javascript errors, then I can follow-up with the theme developer.

Thank you, I really appreciate your help!

    Hey Jen!

It sounds like you have the settings correct – count to -1 and you understand Testimonials Per Slide correctly.

I don’t believe WP_DEBUG will help show any javascript errors – those would appear client side in Firebug’s console (or whichever tool you’re using.)

Of course,I visit owentutoring.com/services/ I see the Widget functioning correctly in the sidebar. Could it be you fixed it before I was able to follow up?

    All the best,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

Yes, I just managed to fix it last night after a lot of trial and error! The hint that something might be “breaking” the javascript was really helpful. My site also had a broken menu for mobile devices, which I think had the same root cause.

I tested uninstalling plugins on my local development and found the culprit! Once that particular plugin was unistalled, both the testimonials and my mobile menu were working again. As a detail for others, the plugin was “Black Studio TinyMCE Widget”, which I find surprising because it has a large number of active installs. Perhaps it was interacting with something else in my setup.

Thanks again for the help, Richard!

Thanks for letting us know what you did to fix it! I’m glad the problem is resolved on your site 🙂
