Support » Themes and Templates » "Template is missing" for child themes

  • Hello,
I’ve been googling for this answer everywhere and tried absolutely everything. I’ve rechecked the CSS a million times I’m going crazy (lowercase lowercase lowercase – yep!)! I think I’m going dyslexic!

So I’m just trying to create a child theme. I’ve created the child folder /wp-content/themes/twentytwelve-child and have a style.css file in that folder that reads:

    Theme Name: Twenty Twelve Child
Description: Child theme for the Twenty Twelve theme
    Author: Your Name Here
    Author URI:
    Template: twentytwelve
    Version: 0.1.0

    @import url(“../twentytwelve/style.css”);

It comes up with ‘Broken Theme’ on my theme page and the message ‘Template is missing’.

But the twentytwelve theme is there!! I have tried uninstalling twentytwelve theme, and installing it again. I’ve tried deleting the child folder and starting from scratch. I have even tried putting in a different theme names – it still comes up with the message ‘Template is missing’. All default templates are in the folder. This is the first action I’ve done since installing wordpress!

I know I am missing something vital if it’s not just happening to the twentytwelve theme but all the themes. Help me!

  • How are you creating the child theme style.css file ? Using a plain text editor?

Yeah! I created it in TextEdit (plain text format) and also in Dreamweaver. I am guessing it’s recognizing the stylesheet because it doesn’t say the stylesheet is missing, but the template is missing?

Template missing would be that it’s not seeing the parent theme – do you have the parent themes installed and the file structure correct:

If that still doesn’t work, you can download one here:

Yep! That’s exactly what it looks like! I’ve even tried installing twentytwelve theme again and creating the child folder again. I’m losing my marbles. Do you think I need to uninstall/re-install wordpress?

Ah! My first experience with web stuff and simple instructions to create this child theme and I can’t even get that to work. Off to a great start! I’m doomed.

    Thanks WPyogi. I’ll do that!
