• There must be several dozen posts on this but I still cant find an answer. I have a non-WP side that I want to keep up while I develop my new WP site. I have set up a hosting account under my current domain name, installed WP, and changed the URL in both the siteURL1 and home rows in the options table (as described in http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL
    I used the phpMyAdmin method

When I try to log in using (tempURL/wp-admin) I get a 404 page not found error

can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

    thanks

  • Change the urls back. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this correctly.

thanks esmi. I appologize for being so dense on this. I did (or thought I did) follow the instructions provided. I used the phpMyAdmin method (4th option listed for changing url). I didn’t do anything else.

A few more specifics that may help..

I do have another WP site on the same server that is working fine. I created an addon domain for my second site. The addon domain is a non-WP site that is still up and running on a different server and I would like to keep it that way until my new site is created.

After creating the addon domain, I installed WP and then changed the domain name as described in the previous post. I have no access to my WP admin panel

    Addon domain: addondomain.com
temp url: serverIPaddress/~serverCpanelUserName/addondomain.com (this was the format prescribed by HostGator (who host my new WP site)

    thanks

Where is WordPress installed on this domain? In a sub-folder?

I am new to this but I believe it is in a subfolder.

As I mentioned, I already have one WP site installed on this server. The WP-Config.php file for that site is located at /public_html/wp-config.php

The WP-Config.php file for the site in question is located at

    /public_html/AddonDomainName/wp-config.php

When did you register the new domain name and/or change the name servers? It can take up to 72 hours for domain name changes to propagate fully.

My domain name is years old. However I havent changed the name servers because I want to keep my old, hosted some where else, site up until I my WP site is ready. Am I doing this all wrong?

Did you update the name servers to point to this new location on your hosting recently?

    Thread Starter scottnorris

    (@scottnorris)

no. I have not changed the name serves for the domain in question in over 3 years.

Have you checked that the domain name is being pointed to the correct sub-folder?

    Thread Starter scottnorris

    (@scottnorris)

The domain name is ScottNorris.com. That is the name of the subfolder. My Temporary URL is http://IPAddress/~CPanelUsername/ScottNorris.com. Since I have professed to being new at this I will confirm that IPaddress and Cpaneluser naees as used above are variables for the actual values. IE in the actual url they contain the real IP address (XX.XX.XXX.XXX) and my real Cpanel userID.

The temp url is in the Home and siteurl rows of the option table for the database for this domain

    Is that what you mean?

Check with your hosts that ScottNorris.com is pointing correctly to that sub-folder.
