Tax report by date does not handle refund

When looking at the «Woocommerce > reports» page, «Taxes» tab, output from the «tax by date» and «tax by code» differ in behavior for order that contain refunds (with and without the «refunded» order status).

«Completed» orders with line item refunds are handled correctly in «tax by code» but the refund are not taken into account in «tax by date».

«Refunded» orders without any line item refunds simply do not appear in either «tax by code» nor «tax by date».

«Refunded» orders with line item refunds (either full or partial) still do not show in «tax by code», and always show as fully refunded in «tax by date».

Seems to me like there is a problem with line item refunds in «tax by date», and «tax by code» does not include «refunded» orders even for partial refunds.

Can you give me an example of what you are seeing and what you think you should be seeing? I’d like to try to copy the same thing for my own site and see if I get the same thing.

Should they be appearing if they are just refunded? I feel like if it’s been refunded it should not appear because no tax was collected.

Yeah it sounds like there might be an issue, but I’d like to try the same Orders / process on my own site just to make sure it’s happening for me too.

Can you also try to update to WooCommerce 3.3.4 to see if you get the same issue?

Well what I see is what I described in my first message (either the order does not show up in report, or refunded amount is 100% of the order amount even if refund line items do not add up to the full order amount, etc). What I expect to see is a report that takes into account the refund line items amounts (reguardless the refunded status).

An example of an order with specifics would be great so I can try to reproduce this on my site.

Create a new order with 2 copies of a 10$ taxed product, set order status to “completed” and refund a copy of the product. This is a partial refund, order status stays to “complete”. Refund will not appear in “tax by date” using
the current day as custom date range.

You can then take that exact same order (including the refunded item) and set the order status to “refunded”. Remove the refund line item that WooCommerce automatically adds upon setting the refunded status. This order will not be taken into account in “tax by code” even though it’s partially refunded and taxes were indeed collected. On the other hand, it will show as fully refunded in “tax by date” even though the refunded amount was only partial.

Can you also try to update to WooCommerce 3.3.4 to see if you get the same issue?

We are scheduled to go into production in the upcoming weeks so unfortunately I cannot update to WooCommerce 3.3.4 right now, but I haven’t seen anything in the update log that indicate anything changed reguarding refunded orders in reports.

Ok, here’s what I have tried

1. I create a new order:

3. I refund one of the line items:

4. Now the taxes adjust accordingly:

5. In the Tax by Date it also now shows the correct tax amount:

Can you tell me if you are seeing the same thing, or what you might be seeing differently? If it’s only a partial-refund it should not show as a refunded order because the whole order is not actually refunded.

Sounds good! If the update doesn’t help, try disabling all other plugins to see if that fixes the problem.
