We had a sale and the sale is in CA and so the customer should be charged CA tax based on his location. Tax was not charged for the sale so what can I do to fix it because now we have to pay the tax out of own pocket.

Ok because we just had another order that tax was not charged for. The site is at https://www.gymbrofitness.com/. Here is the order in question and you can see no tax charged but it’s a California Zip so tax is applicable:

    Hi @calfree,

Would it be possible for you to activate the plugin once again so that we can check it? Also please confirm if tax is added in the case of other payment methods.

    Hi

I will activate the plugin again but I can only do so for a short period of time. Yes all the tax is correct and it works fine for normal payment methods. Could you give me a time so i know when to activate it and then I will leave it on for say an hour?

I presume you are in India based on your company website. so can we arrange a time tomorrow that suits you to have a look?

    Hi @calfree,

Kindly create a staging site copy of the live one and share the site so that we can test it. Testing it during a short window would be difficult considering the volume of support queries we are handling.

    Hi

I cannot create a staging area with our current setup. Please give me a time and I will enable the plugin and keep it enabled for at least 6 hours

In that case, please enable it between UTC time 04:00 am and 12:00 pm and let us know.

    Hi @calfree,

Please switch PayPal to sandbox mode and enter your test credentials so that we can place a test order. We can’t test the site while the gateway is in live mode.

I put it in sandbox mode

    Hi @calfree,

Thanks for providing the requested access.

We checked the site and identified the reason for the issue. Since you do not have shipping options enabled on the site, when users checkout using the PayPal Express checkout option from the cart page, they need not enter the address and hence can directly proceed. However, this skips the tax calculation in the site as you have a state-specific tax rate setup on the site. This is not a bug/error but rather a misconfiguration.

As you need address to calculate tax in your site, you will need to force users to update their address in the cart page by enabling the option Enable the shipping calculator on the cart page under Woocommerce Settings > Shipping > Shipping Options page.

This will help to calculate the tax before proceeding to PayPal even if the user clicks express checkout button from cart page.

PS: You may now revert back the changes made in the site for our testing.
