• When I try to insert an image into a post and select Medium size, it resizes the image to 300px tall. Since the image is taller than it is wide, this makes the image far too skinny.

Even if I go to Settings -> Miscellaneous and change “Max height” to 2000px or 10000px, it still resizes to 300 tall. How do I change this setting or override it?

  • Well, the original image will still be the same size. You’d have to upload a new one to see the effects of your max height and width settings.

If that’s not the problem, then I’d start looking around in the stylesheet.

No, the original images are 485px × 1360px and 485px × 454px. In “medium” size (Add an Image in the rich text editor, Medium setting, as opposed to Thumbnail or Full size), the images are squished to fit in a 300px × 300px box (106px × 300px and 300px × 280px, respectively). I would rather see 300px × 841px for the first one (constrained only in the width dimension), but trying to change this setting does nothing.

Endolith: You’re missing what he actually said.

The image is actually resized into the medium and thumbnail sizes at the time that you actually upload it. Changing those settings will not affect images that you have already uploaded. You have to reupload the image to get any effect from changing those settings.

And now when I try to re-upload them I get an “HTTP error”

I am really getting sick of WordPress and all its bugs.

Ok. It should really create the thumbnail and medium size images when you ask it to create them (and allow other sizes on demand), but I understand why it wasn’t working.

HTTP errors and other image uploader issues can be fixed by following these instructions:

That would be step 6 in the thread I posted a link to.

All the image uploader problems I’ve found/fixed have their solutions there. I recommend anybody having these issues to try there first.
