Taking over a wordpress site from old administrator

You can use one of the methods outlined on this page Resetting Your Password to reset the administrator’s password.
After you reset the password, login to WordPress and create a new administrator account for yourself. Sign out and sign in as the newly created user and delete the previous admin user.

Alternatively, you can follow the instructions on this page: How to Add an Admin User to the WordPress Database via MySQL, to create a new user directly in the database. This way you can skip the logging in and creating a new account in WordPress part.

Either way, after you create the new user for yourself and log in, you should delete the old user for security.
