I upgraded to WordPress 5 today, and with it the new editor. But the one thing missing are my “Tags”. When I click the arrow to expand the Tags, nothing appears. I can’t see my “most used tags”. I can enter a New Tag in the box, but I’d prefer to select the ones I use from a list rather than enter them manually each time.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I concur with all here who need the “most used tags” back. Totally inefficient to try to guess at how you wrote previous tags in hopes that the auto-complete will help. It sure looks pretty and clean to have just a single search field but it sure is a time waster. Bring back “most used tags” please.

In my view this is a classic case of form over function. Make something look clean, sleek and tidy at the expense of the functionality. Whereas, given that this is a CMS it should be that functionality takes precedence over appearance.

When it comes to content consumption, I’d agree that removing clutter and being minimalist is advantageous. But we are taking about content creation here, where speed and accuracy should take priority. This current interface allows me down AND causes inconsistency with tags.

This is especially true with multiple authors who may use different, but similar tags when they should be using the same one from the list which is now hidden to the author.

Dropping ‘most used tags’ is a bad idea. I’ve been porting a lot of custom entry on the post editor page as several of the hooks I used to use are no longer firing in Gutenberg. Starting to play around in Gutenberg (begrudgingly), the second thing I noted was “most used tags” disappeared in favor of an autocomplete. Ugh.

The first thing I noticed is that my CPTs don’t use Gutenberg by default which I didn’t expect.

Tag are not listed out, since sites can tend to have hundreds (if not thousands) of tags. Instead, as you being to type your tag, WordPress will make suggestions to auto-complete the tag based on your previous tags.

Excatly. I am really trying to slim down my tags so I try to use the same 10-20 over and over, but I can’t remember if now I’m using project or projects or project-based-learning or PBL. Having the most-used tags helps me with that. WordPress gets less and less user-friendly every update.

If you need to check your most used tags, Posts > Tags in your Dashboard and sort by count.

That doesn’t help when you’re writing a new post. Navigating away from the post to check tags is slower and far less convenient than just having the most used tags listed right there to click on.

It’s like saying “we removed the speedometer from your cars dashboard, but if you need to know how fast you were going, just look under the hood as we’ve got a record of your speed stored in there.”

Understood, just trying to provide a workable alternative.

Unfortunately this topic got derailed and the people who develop WordPress have just ignored the issue.

To be clear, you’re currently in the support forums, it’s our job to find you workable alternatives for the software as-is.

If you want to reach the developers, you’ll need to follow these steps: https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/testing/reporting-bugs/

I agree with the others. The new system for adding tags is cumbersome and just really a pain to use. It was so easy to quickly click on a list of the most popular tags and then add any new ones. It would help a little if the window listing tags would stay open so that more than one could be clicked on rather than having to start retyping very time a tag is chosen. As it is, the way it’s set up now is just annoying. There has to be a better way to redesign this.

I miss that feature as well so I’ve just created a ticket (just so you know):
