I have the problem in which an extra template line is creating an xml syntax error in the sitemap. I reduced all extra lines in the theme files in an attempt to fix the issue. Now my sitemap still has that problem but it has a new problem as well. All of the element tags close improperly. The closing elements don’t have the / slash. So I get
    <lastmod>somevalue<lastmod>
    instead of
    <lastmod>somevalue</lastmod>

Any idea how I broke it?

That URL returns a 404 error. We need the link for your XML sitemap created by our plugin or we cannot help you.

I’m sorry that was a pilot error. I let the system rename it to “old”

    here it is

    Hi Caroline,

I agree that looks very strange, but your live sitemap appears to be fine, although it doesn’t actually appear to be dynamically generated; what did you change? I know of nothing in the plugin that should cause this, I’d suggest testing on a development site, disabling any plugins that may be conflicting, and also testing against one of the themes that ship with WordPress, such as Twenty Fifteen, to narrow down what might be the source of the problem.

I edited the bad output by hand and that’s how you end up seeing a good map.

What are the consequences to my work if I uninstall and re-install?

I did shut off all plugins and it still did it so I think maybe I have a corrupt aioseo file or db setting.

    Hi Caroline,

The possible consequence is, it might fix your problem if this is due to a corrupt plugin file. You won’t lose any data by uninstalling and reinstalling.

    Reinstalling fixed it. Thanks!
