I am not sure what happened. I upgraded to 2.8.4 about 2 weeks ago. About two days ago I lost all my tags, categories, links and some sidebar functionality. I did not save a backup as my host service does that and if there is an issue I can usually restore the site. When the problem happened I contacted my service but as can sometimes be the case the guy there did not restore the site to a week or go or know how to deal with the problem. So now am I stuck with no tags or categories or ability to display links in my sidebar?

I can see my tags on my tag page in the admin area and my links as well, but all categories are gone. On my edit page I can see no categories. The field is blank. If I try to add a new category nothing happens. Same with tags. I can enter a tag but it never appears. My link widget just not work at all.

I will not get any help form the tech guy there. Maybe the guy I deal with usually will be back from vacation soon and something can be sorted out, but why can’t I at least add new tags and categories? Why can’t I display my blogroll?

I have nothing to restore it seems. I will now do my own database backup when I upgrade (should have already I guess).

Anyone know why this is? the topic appears to unresolved in the forum posts.

  • Dam this problem is annoying!

I’ve watched categories being automatically created with my script for weeks just fine, suddenly it messes up. Not only does it not return child of parents but for some reason categories disappear and posts reorganised.

I believe the problem is not the syntax so to speak, its the data! Taxonomy may be wrong so badly that its being overwritten by newer categories and posts which causes older ones to shift. I’m finding posts changing categories.

As I said I’ve changed nothing in this area of my script and its a big script. Working on it for last 16 hours now trying to solve this, seriously long day and feeding my 2 month year old lol

We’ll get there even if I need to pay lol

Not sure if this will help everyone. But I was having the same problem when I upgraded to 2.8.6, all my Categories disappeared from my site.

After some research I tracked it down to an update that needed to be made to the plugin My Category Order.

    http://forum.bytesforall.com/showthread.php?t=4010

I had this issue, and long with it, I had the following text appear at the bottom of all my blog pages:

Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_dbf497a416add3796ab73cc7663d8b93, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown on line 0

Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0

I emailed my hosting provider about it, and they fixed it on their end, but didn’t give me any details about what the problem is.

So I’d recommend you all contacting your host to see if there’s an issue on their side they can fix.

We are also facing the same problem – perhaps it disappeared when we upgraded to 2.9.2 – but now we have upgraded now to WP 3 (replaced all files) – but still not showing. Then I replaced even the template – but the problem still persists.

I have approx 20000 posts in my blog and approx 40 categories.

I tried using plugins to show categories also – but same problem.

    What can be likely issue?
