tag on various themes don't show the horizontal scroll

I have done some searches and tried to edit the css and no luck.

I’m very new to this and when looking at some other blog’s, I see that when they use the pre tag, and paste code or an output, that you get a nice box and also a horizontal scroll, which is nice. When I use the pre tag, I don’t get the scroll bar at all. I had a friend whom also is using WordPress and he was surprised that when he tried to use the pre tag, that it didn’t do what it is suppose to do like on his blog.

I’m new to this, so any easy way to get this working or a theme I can just use. My buddies theme is not available anymore, so I can’t use what he was using.
