    Hi,

we installed Site Kit and had it enabled for a while, all working as expected. GA was tracking like a champ. Then we got into Tag Manager and enabled it through site kit. In our initial TM config, we had a tag that fires GA.

Site Kit since removed the GA snippet from the page, and no matter what we do, it won’t insert it (even though it says it is inserted). My guess is that Site Kit detected that we were firing GA through Tag Manager and disabled the snippet?

Even if we remove the GA tag from Tag Manager, and then remove the GA snippet through Site Kit and add it back in, the GA snippet is not inserted anymore.

We have re-enabled the GA tag in Tag Manager for now. But there clearly seems to be some conflict between Site Kit’s GA and Tag Managers GA tag.

How is this supposed to work?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • @cryptochrome thanks for the topic! Site Kit currently doesn’t detect the Analytics tag in Google Tag Manager, so you’d have to choose whether to use Site Kit snippet or use the Tag Manager to integrate the GA tracking code.

When I view the source code of the site, I see Site Kit’s code for Google Tag Manager, but also this other snippet for Analytics that looks to be from another method (not Site Kit). Did you use another method to integrate GA snippet previously?

I’m suspecting Site Kit is not inserting its snippet because this is present, however any further details would be great.

    Hi Renee,

this is super weird. We have not used any other method to inject the GA snippet. And Site Kit usually detects if a snippet is inserted and reports that on the Dashboard. However, in this case it just says “snippet is inserted”.

    Thanks
    Sascha

EDIT: Where exactly did you find this? I just pulled up our site, looked at the page source and the snippet you found is not showing up.

@cryptochrome thanks for the info! I found it on the homepage. I do notice you have caching on the page. Are you able to temporarily disable it and reset the the Analytics connection?

What might be throwing me off is this class inserted into the snippet code: cmplz-script cmplz-stats . I see it in both the Analytics and the GTM code. So this may be Site Kit’s snippet if you aren’t using another method, but that class is unfamiliar.

Here’s typically how the snippet is implemented by Site Kit without that class.

Are you using a plugin that may be inserting it?

    Hi Renee,

the cmplz-script cmplz-stats come from a plugin named Complianz, which is a cookie consent manager (cookie banner). The plugin has an option to configure GA, but that option is turned off and I have never provided it with our GA tracking code. So the plugin couldn’t have inserted it, unless it was taking the tracking code from somewhere else. In the early days, when we started the site, we were using wordpress.com’s JetPack plugin to enable Google Analytics. But that has been disabled when we installed Site Kit.

The Site Kit injected the snippet perfectly fine before. Then we installed GTM (through Site Kit) and that’s when the Snippet disappeared (while Site Kit still claiming it’s injected the snippet):

When we had JetPack and Site Kit active at the same time, Site Kit properly showed that the snippet was inserted by another plugin.

EDIT: As for your question about caching: We are using wordpress.com and I believe they have caching enabled by default with no option to change that. Either way, we have no plugin installed for caching, so this is outside of my control.

What’s weird is that what you saw is not showing up when I look at the page source.

@cryptochrome thanks for the update and the additional information about your setup. While the plugin currently is compatible with WordPress.org sites, I’m going to confer with the team about setup expectations in the WordPress.com environment. The source code from my view has updated, and I don’t see Site Kit currently installed. I’ll follow up with you as soon as I have more information.

@cryptochrome I’ve confirmed that everything should work properly for WordPress.com sites (that are able to install plugins).

If possible, could you re-enable Site Kit and view the source code of the site in an incognito browser (or alternate browser where you’re not logged into WordPress)?

Ultimately, you’d only want to use one method to connect the site to Analytics (you can use Site Kit’s snippet or Tag Manager). In any case Site Kit, can still be configured to display data for the appropriate site in its settings since that is attached to your Google Account.

    Hi Renee,

thanks for following up. We have since decided to remove Site Kit and just use Tag Manager exclusively. The added bonus of having SiteKit’s dashboard right in the WP dashboard is something that’s not too important to me, so SiteKit doesn’t make a lot of sense anymore (for our use case).

I appreciate your help on this though, thanks a lot!
