Sync of Book covers for Privacy Laws in Europe

    Hi,

    concerning the new privacy laws in germany and europe, each place including data from a server that is not the websites server, is disobaing the law.

    So since the covers are only referenced by url, the ip addres of the client is sent to goodreads servers to request the image. To solve this problem, could you add a Option to also sync the covers as media to the website itself? Then there would only be server to server communicaion and not client to external server.

    Is that breaking the law now? Sounds very weird, since AFAIK that would destroy the whole CDN thing the internet pretty much depends on nowadays. Can you point me to a place I can read more about this?

    Hey,
    the applicable law only starts on May 25th 2018, it is called “DSGVO”(german) or “GDPR”(europe), and if i’m not mistaken and understood the things right, we are not even allowed, to use google-webfonts, based on a google url, since then the client who visits our page will also connect to google, even tho he didn’t ask for it.

    Thank you for the link. Unfortunately I don’t have the capacity to research this thoroughly, neither do I have the capacity to implement the “local cover image” feature you suggest.

    If you’re concerned that your use of the plugin means your website is not compliant with GDPR, then I’m afraid the only tip I can give you is “don’t use it”.

    is there a Git i could contribute to instead of writing a plugin that depends on your plugin and might not be perfectly updateble?
