    Hi WordPress forum members!

Recently, I’ve decided to take webdeveloping as my new hobby. Seeing as i’m a full time university student, I only have 2 houres a day to spend. I have no background or experience in this field whatsoever, though i’m very excited and motivated to start learning.

    Cliffs:
    – Here’s what i need YOU for: I would like to develop a website (one that doesnt look like other standard templates) matching the following description/ including the following components:

-1 Website is community-based: memberaccounts and profiles are needed. Sort of like Facebook.
    -2 Blog (obviously)
    -3 Pages with information/ tutorials
    -4 Webshop (optional)
    -5 Forum (later stage)

-How can i best start and succesfully complete this task?
-Should i start learning the languages (html, php, java,…) first?
-How long will it take me?
-Where should i look for information(links are appreciated)

Thanks everyone for your time and effort,

    Yours Faithfully,

    BBWordpress

P.S. Appoligies for the tempting, though somewhat misleading thread title.

  • How can i best start and succesfully complete this task?

Download WordPress, install it onto your web hosting package and start playing around with it.

Should i start learning the languages (html, php, java,…) first?

You will need at least HTML and CSS to make theme changes. It’s very rare to find a theme that does everything that you want and looks exactly how you want it to. After that, start in with JavaScript (not Java – they are different langauges used for very different things) and PHP.

How long will it take me?

Somewhere between 2 hours and the rest of your life. There’s way ot many factors that could be an influence to how long something like this will take you to be able to giv eany sort of realistic guess.

Where should i look for information(links are appreciated)

wordpress.org Seriously, most of what you’ll need to know is on here, and if it’s not you can do some searches for it when you figure out what you actually need.

In all honesty, that project is pretty big, and if you haven’t had any experience in wordpress before, and you don’t even know HTML, then you are in for a very steep learning curve. With 2 hours a day to do all of what you want, including all of the learning that you’ll need, don’t be surprised if you don’t see any results for a very long time. It will be hard, and at time sit will seem like the problems are just to much, but if you stick it out and work through issues to get to where you want to to, you’ll find it’s well worth it.

    Thanks for the response,

You gave me the answer i expected, but not the answers i was hoping to hear. It seems i have a long way to go, but im still very excited to start my new journey.

Maybe after 3 months, if i still haven’t learnt as much as i wanted to, ill just assign a ‘real’ webdeveloper/ programmer to the project.

Any idea how much it will cost me on average??

    Like $XXX?, $1XXX?, $2XXX?,…,$XXXXX?, $XXXXXXXXXXXX?

Also, is messing around with Childtemplates a good place to start? Better yet, what’s the best thing to do first( besides the beforehand mentioned)

Any idea how much it will cost me on average??

I’m sorry but these forums are not a suitable place to discuss commercial costings.
