• Hi,

Since there are talks of a premium version of geeSearch Plus, might I make a few feature suggestions:

    – Search log: logging what the users search for (and an option to exclude searches by admins from the search log would be great too)
    – Highlighting through PHP, instead of through JavaScript (cause, let’s face it, the JavaScript highlighting is a hack, rather that a solution)

    Great plug-in by the way!

    Hi Namibia,

    Thanks for suggestions!

In the past there was plans to develop a premium version of the plugin, but that project is on standby. So geeSearch will continue to grow in features and always available here in the WordPress.org.

The Search Log is already in the roadmap to enable a simple auto-complete function in the search input box.

As per the highlight, unless you show me exactly what the problem is with the ‘hack’, I’m not planning to change it in the near feature. May I also note that as per the plugin version 1.3, the highlight is done through an element class, so you might change the style on your theme’s CSS.

    Thanks for the kind words!

There are performance penalties with JavaScript (freezes the browser for a few seconds), and compatibility issues (some users like to disable JavaScript alltogether). The other advantage of the PHP approach is to eventually implement your own excerpt-builder, centered around the found word. Because currently, the excerpt returned is always the beginning of the post: but let’s say this beginning represents one tenth (1/10) of the entire post. This means that 9 times out of 10 the excerpt does not contain the found word and is irrelevant to the search.

Of course, this requires a lot of work, which is why I was giving it as a suggestion for the “premium version”. The “free version” is great as it is, and I am very grateful that you’re providing it to us, and that you’re devoting your spare time to it.

    Hi

Sorry for the late answer but I didn’t get your last comment on my email box.

Thanks for all the suggestions. They are very valuable and I’ll try to address them in a future release.

    Thanks
