While it's not possible to stop all spammers, if you don't already have BadBehavior installed, it will help block some of those from registering.

It will also block black listed ip's etc from other potential malicious activity.

You may also want to add a captcha to the registration form. I highly recommend WP-reCAPTCHA.

Unlike most captcha, reCAPTCHA addresses most of the complaints about captcha with refreshable challenges and audio challenge options, and every reCAPTCHA solution helps to improve the OCR technology being used to make digital translations of old books.

I've getting up to a dozen signups a day, a lot from 'human bots' so recaptcha etc is no protection. The registrations are easy to identify because the first and last names are usually the same and usually gibberish.

A plugin that could identify registration attempts that have the same first and last names would fix that.
