Support » Requests and Feedback » Suggestions for a WP Feature : Theme Management

  • I would like to suggest the following feature to be added to the core WP.
    1. Allow the user to upload a .zip file, containing the theme that he wants to upload
    2. Extract it automatically in the server and put it under the wp-content/themes/

This way, the user has to just download the theme from anyone releasing it and then “upload it through WP” and just start using it.

Ofcourse I am OK if i have to specify .zip to be an allowable extension, for file uploads.

    Is it possible ?
    Thanks in Advance

It certainly sounds possible to me. Please submit your feature request as a bug and select “Feature Request” as the priority.

A clever idea – definitely doable (think about all the jar files that get autoextracted onto servers).

There is a potential security hole however. Themes contain PHP. PHP files are server executable. So, I would be careful about exactly who you give this permission to. If you wouldn’t be comfortable giving the person at least a 7 user priv, I wouldn’t let him post ZIPs. If they are a trusted friend and you don’t have mission critical files on your webserver, then it’s a conveinent way to allow customization. Otherwise, it’s a nice backdoor for people to screw things up (or to download shady files and accidentally screw things up).
