SUFFUSION: how to add featured content to…

In Suffusion I’ve chosen the right and left sidebar template. As is, there is no featured article slider. How do I add it to look like this?

I enabled the featured content to show on the main page, but there’s nothing there. Then I added a widget area below the header and added featured content to that widget, but it looks awful floating on the left side with a big blank space on the right. I even set the widget to have three columns, thinking I could add it to the center column and achieve what I wanted, but there is no place to choose which column I want the content to appear in.
Anyone know how to achieve the look I have right now with Suffusion alone?
