This morning all our subdomain sites are directing to a 404 page. Was using wp version 4.2 so I updated to 4.2.1 and updated the network to see if it would fix, unfortunately it did not.

    Steps I’ve taken.
    1. Shut off all plugins.
    2. uninstalled and re-installed WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin.
    3. activated WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin and followed direction. Placed the sunrise.php file in the wp-content directory. Added define( ‘SUNRISE’, ‘on’ ); above the last require_once() in the wp-config file.

Now when selecting ‘Domain Mapping’ or ‘Domains’ options under the Setting menu item I receive the message:

“Please edit your /home/typeshif/public_html/wp-config.php and move the line define( ‘SUNRISE’, ‘on’ ); above the last require_once() in that file or make sure you updated sunrise.php.”

This message is in a constant loop, can’t get to any settings so I shut the plugin off and installed ‘Domain Mapping’ plugin by WPMU DEV.

This plugin displays, under Mapping Domain > Health Status, “Invalid.” This requires me to edit individual settings for the subdomain which I cannot because accessing the subdomain dashboard sends me to a 404 page.

Any direction to help me get this resolved would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time in advance!!

Sooooo did you edit the file and add the line like it said?

Hello Ipstenu, yes I did. That was my step number 3.

I was able to get the sunrise.php file working. I re-installed the plugin via ftp rather than the wordpress admin dashboard and it worked.

However still having the same problem with the sub-domains site and dashboard redirecting to 404.

We got everything back up and running. Turns out it was our bluehost server. For whatever reason we now have to park each domain on the sever rather than just adding A records to the domains zone file.

I just woke up to a similar problem, do you use godaddy hosting? And to fix this, you say I must use their provided cpanel to add my new sites instead of using the sites feature in WP?

Hi there noMATTERdesign. My hosting provider is Bluehost. I did both. I kept the domain mapping that was already established using the MU Domain Mapping plugin. In addition I had to park the domain names on our server and also add the subdomains. Hope this helps ya!!
