Support » Plugin: Wordfence Security - Firewall & Malware Scan » Subpages Not Working

For some reason it seems that wordfence is preventing pages from loading. Everything worked fine last week and it looks like there are updated php files in wflogs from today. This is the only thing that has changed on the site since last week. When I disable wordfence it works fine.

The other odd thing is this seems to only be happening on my dev site even though both sites have updated those php files.

I’m getting this error when trying to view woocommerce categories.
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1310720 bytes) in /home/<myusername>/public_html/dev/wp-includes/category-template.php on line 652

Other pages are just not loading at all with no error shown.

I feel like I need to roll back these files. How can I do this?

    Sorry for the trouble.

There are a few things to try here. I would first try upping the memory on the site to rule out the memory error being the issue, as it may very well be.

If upping the memory doesn’t change anything, you can make a local backup of the wflogs folder in wp-content and then delete the wflogs in wp-content — it will automatically regenerate. Though, I do not suspect the wflogs folder/changes to be the issue. I would first check the memory error. Keep the local backup of wflogs in case you need to replace the regenerate wflogs folder for some reason.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Memory is already at 128mb so if your plugin needs more while I’m just trying to view a page then that’s not right. That’s a bug.

Regenerating wflogs seemed to help the main (non woocommerce) pages load.

I feel like the problem is we have a large category tree for woocommerce. 1500+ products and 8000+ categories. The categories will get trimmed back once I load them on the live site…..but it will still be close to 4000 categories. The live site works and the dev site does not.

What is your plugin doing as woocommerce category and product pages are loading? What is it caching? Even the empty shopping cart page can’t load. Are you checking something with the cookies or session and then blocking it? I’ve seen your plugin prevent me from submitting custom meta tags through my theme’s customizer so maybe you are blocking woocommerce from doing something?

I’ll think about increasing memory….There are lots of categories so maybe its reasonable that more memory is needed.

HOWEVER to my thinking I can’t understand what you might be monitoring on Woocommerce pages that would cause this memory spike…..and I’ve seen your plugin be a little too heavy handed on stuff before. But maybe there’s a setting we can change that will reduce the server resources needed.

    Thanks for you patience.

As far as pages prevented from being shown, are they loading a blank page, a block page, or just loading for a long amount of time? If you’re seeing a block with Wordfence enabled, then Learning Mode would be recommended.

The error you mentioned is simply a memory allocation error, and isn’t due specifically to one plugin, but instead a culmination of all plugins running on the site at once:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1310720 bytes) in /home/<myusername>/public_html/dev/wp-includes/category-template.php on line 652

If you’re running a handful more plugins than these two, 128m may simply not be enough.

It is very common to see 256m or 512m set for the memory_limit, and that should be the first step to see if this issue is remedied after. The other option is to remove plugins from the site that you do not need in order to reduce the memory you’re using.

Please let me know if you’re seeing anything block/Wordfence related when the pages do not load.

    Thanks,
    Scott

They are loading to a blank page or a page that looks partially loaded.

I’ll try to get the memory switched and see if that helps and post an update.

    Thanks.
