• Hello everybody,

Please, help me if you can with the next problem I have.

    Description:
I want to make a site on a wp premium platform with 40 subfolders (I’m not a fan of subdomains and I don’t want to use Wildcard) These 40 subdomains I want to be administrated by password by different persons. I’m looking for a simpler way of doing this. And is very important for me to have this possibility of password the subfolders

    Questions:

1/ -what WordPress will be better for multisite/ multifolders development? 3.02 or another?

2/ -whay steps should I follow?

3/- Is anything to answer the web hosting company to provide me before . After this link – http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network, appears that I shoul ask the hoster about multisite. In the same link : Sub-directory sites It works with the use of the mod_rewrite feature on the server having the ability to read the .htaccess file, which will create the link structure.

-What about this? I need a programmer for this? Is so complicated?

Many many thanks for your answers

There’s only 3.1, there’s no ‘normal’ and MU anymore since 3.0.

Do you want the admin behind a password or the website itself? In a network, you just get 40 different blogs with each an admin.

Nah, you just need mod_rewrite, most hosts offer that by default.

    Is so complicated?

If you have mod_rewrite, WP will do everything for you. It is not much harder than just installing WP.

Thank you for your answer 🙂

Somebody told me – for password a subfolder I might try .htaccess si .htpasswd (CPanel knows to do it).

Do you want the admin behind a password or the website itself? In a network, you just get 40 different blogs with each an admin.

I am the super administrator of http://www.domain.com let’s say and I want passwords on http://www.domanin.com/texas, http://www.domain.com/florida etc so, these administrator could upload pictures and everyting on their subfolders by password. And I want all these subfolders to look exactly like the main page.

It’s not clear to me what you mean with “subfolders”. Let’s take me as an example. I have a main site at gangleri.nl and I have five subsites, gangleri.nl/articles, gangleri.nl/bookreviews, gangleri.nl/filmreviews, gangleri.nl/musicreviews and gangleri.nl/news.
These subsites are individual websites, each with their own posts, their own admin, etc., but since I’m in a network, I have a ‘main dashboard’ from which I can go from one site to another. Each subsite can have a user (I would be administrator) who can make posts, upload photos and the like. The subsites look similar, because I use the same theme in all of them (that does not have to be so).

In you example it looks like all subfolders are copies of the main site but with different photos?

You can htaccess protect subfolders (but not so easily in case of a network, since then the subfolders are virtual), but what would be the use of that?

So, the site is http://www.domain.nl and you gave on this site different pages and categories: photos, videos, articles etc.
The subfolders/subdirectories will look like this:
    http://www.domain.nl/amsterdam
    http://www.domain.nl/rotterdam
    http://www.domain.nl/utrecht
    and so on

Every subfolder will have the same pages and categories as http://www.domain.nl

I need to make passwords on every subfolder because I need to protect the main CPanel (where only I have access)and to simplify the posting in subfolders. Every admin of a subfolder will manage his subfolder and update when he wants. Of course the content will be different on every subfolder and this will make the site stronger in Seo, authority etc

WordPress multisite will do exactly what you require.

However, you won’t see actual subfolders in CPanel or on the filesystem. If you find this confusing, just set it up and you’ll see what we mean.

Whether the subsites will look the same depends on the theme they choose. They can look very different. Unfortunately you’ll have to setup the categories and pages separately for each subsite.

Yes, the admin of each subsite will have his own account and you can assign users so they can only edit subsites you want them to edit.

We can continue the discussion on the Dutch forum is you like.

I would still go for a network, everybody has to log in to his/her own ‘subsite’, you don’t have to do anything with htaccess and when the roles of the other people are not ‘admin’, but just ‘author’ or ‘contributor’, they’ll have only their own dashboards and you can see all.

hi roy, that’s not quite correct. they can be ‘admin’ too, but just of their own subsite. Of course, you can also make them network admins if you want.

    Thanks for your answer Roy

The problem is 🙂 I’m from Romania, I’m not from Holland. The examples were chosen specially for you. So, I can’t join the dutch forum because I don’t understand a word. Sorry for this

Yes, the network with Wildcard is the official answer. I thought I could skip the wildcard installation because I’m some kind of afraid of it. I prefer to put my website in a programmer’s hands and to see what will get

Thank you again for your support. I will return here, on the forum to help the others to configure such network in case I will succeed

    Best Regards
